Last year’s inaugural running of this half marathon had a terrific turnout. It was a point to point race and I understand that race organizers are developing plans for changes to the course. Clearly it was a destination race for many based upon the 2014 results.
FROM THE RACE ORGANIZERS: THE COURSE
The course for the Great Smoky Mountains Half is a beautiful run through the woods just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The course begins near Heritage High School in the Hubbard Community outside Maryville and ends in Townsend, just under a mile from the National Park boundary. The finish line is at the visitors center in Townsend with beautiful views of the mountains. Miles 9 – 12 will be even further away from the main road, and this is where some of the hills come in. There is a 364 foot elevation gain on this course. It is a subtle and steady gain. Along these last few miles you have a few ups and downs.
IT’S AN OPEN COURSE: This race is an open course. There will be cars on the road as well as runners. DO NOT step off the course into traffic, you will be disqualified. We want you to stay safe.
A course elevation chart:
It’s a slightly uphill course but keep in mind, this chart is not zero-based.
